Meet the Faculty of the UW Bachelor’s in HIMT Program

The UW Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management and Technology faculty are either tenured faculty or working healthcare leaders serving as adjunct faculty. Specialty areas include nursing, information systems, public health, computer science, and biology. The program is a partnership of UW Extended Campus and UW–Green Bay, UW–Parkside, and UW–Stevens Point.


Meet the Faculty

John Bennett, PhD, JD, CHPS | UW–Parkside

John Bennett, PhD, is a visiting assistant professor at UW–Parkside.

During Dr. Bennett’s PhD program, he isolated several novel RNA molecules from Hodgkin’s lymphoma cell lines. He continued his work in cancer as an NIH postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University. Dr. Bennett began teaching during his time as a postdoctoral fellow and has taught for nearly 20 years. He has a broad range of interests that come through in the classroom, beginning with molecular biology and microbiology, and including physiology and public health. Recently, John completed law school and earned his JD from Marquette University. He is an elder law attorney and has started a patient advocacy company.

Dr. Bennett received his PhD in molecular biology from Loyola University of Chicago, and graduated from UW–Stevens Point with majors in biology and chemistry and a minor in mathematics.

Jason Davis, PhD | UW–Stevens Point

Jason Davis, PhD, is an associate professor of economics at UW–Stevens Point.

Dr. Davis joined the faculty at UW–Stevens Point in the fall of 2002, following teaching experiences at Michigan State University and Alma College. He teaches courses in microeconomics, public economics, health economics, and ecological economics. His research focuses on understanding the impact of expansions to Medicaid programs such as BadgerCare. He resides in Stevens Point with his wife and two sons.

Dr. Davis earned his BA in economics and management from Albion College, and his MA and PhD in economics from Michigan State University.

Robert Dollinger, PhD | UW–Stevens Point

Robert Dollinger, PhD, is a professor at UW–Stevens Point.

Dr. Dollinger has taught courses in databases, programming, algorithms, and data structures. His research interests include qualitative reasoning, constraint networks, order-of-magnitude models, database query languages, transaction processing models, object-oriented systems, automated code generation, data mining, intelligent tutoring systems, emerging Web development technologies, and rich Internet applications. He continuously maintains contact with the professional community outside the university boundaries through joint projects with software and computing companies or as an expert consultant.

Dr. Dollinger obtained his PhD in artificial intelligence and MS in computer science from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

David Gibbs, PhD | UW–Stevens Point

David Gibbs, PhD, is a senior lecturer at UW–Stevens Point.

Dr. Gibbs’ teaching experience has been in programming languages, most recently in Python, Java, C#, and various Web client and server languages. He has also taught and delivered lectures on the social aspects of technology. He has extensive experience in both developing and delivering online instruction, having done so for both the UW-Colleges and UW–Stevens Point.

Dr. Gibbs earned his PhD in educational technology at UW–Madison. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in computer science, both from San Diego State University.

Weimin He, PhD | UW–Stevens Point

Weimin He, PhD, is a professor in the Computing and New Media Technologies department at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point.

Dr. He has over 20-years research experience on database management. His research interests include XML data management, information retrieval and big data management.  Dr. He has over 30 peer-reviewed publications in international conference proceedings and journals. He has also served as member or program committee chair at several international conferences and journals. Dr. He’s teaching experience includes database, programming languages, data structures and algorithms, and big data management.

Dr. He received his PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Arlington. He received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Computer Science from Yunnan University, China.

Daniel McCarty, PhD, CHDA | UW–Stevens Point

Professional headshot of John McCartyDaniel McCarty, PhD, is a professor in the School of Health Sciences and Wellness at UW–Stevens Point.

Dr. McCarty is an epidemiologist with wide research interests, including obesity and diabetes prevention. Following his doctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the International Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia, and was a research scientist at the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation in Marshfield, Wisconsin.

Dr. McCarty earned a PhD at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, an MS at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and a BA from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Misty Neal, MBA, RHIA | UW–Green Bay

Misty Neal is the HIMT Program Director for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus. She has been an HIMT educator since 2014. Misty is certified as an RHIA and holds a master’s degree in business administration with healthcare focus from Albany State University.

Outside of teaching, her career has focused on management of the Health Information Management department at an acute care facility in South Georgia and serving on the GHIMA Board in various capacities.

Heidi Neverman, MSN | UW–Green Bay

Heidi Neverman, MSN, is an Assistant Teaching Professor at UW–Green Bay.

Heidi Neverman has been a practicing nurse for 30 years in the areas of emergency care, maternal / child health and school nursing.  While in her nursing roles, she was involved in numerous informatics and information management projects, one of which included the development of proprietary communicable disease tracking and monitoring software for a large school system.

Neverman earned her MSN in Nursing Informatics from the University of Mary and her BS degrees in nursing and human biology, both from the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay.

Betty Rockendorf, MS, RHIA, CHPS, CHTS-IM | UW–Parkside

Betty Rockendorf, MS, RHIA, CHPS, CHTS-IM, is the HIMT Program Director and instructor at UW–Parkside.

Betty Rockendorf has extensive experience working in health care. She worked at Ministry Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin for 17+ years, where she served as Director of Health Information Management and Privacy Officer before joining the HIMT faculty in 2016. She was recently appointed to the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Council for Excellence in Education (CEE) and served as Past President and Board member for the Wisconsin Health Information Management Association (WHIMA).  Her knowledge, credentials, and extensive HIM network are employed frequently as she obtains Capstone placements for students in their final semester of the HIMT program.

Ms. Rockendorf earned her Master’s of Health Information Management from The College of St. Scholastica and her Bachelor’s degree in Business from the UW–Green Bay.

Brenda Tyczkowski, DNP, RN | UW–Parkside

Brenda Tyczkowski, RN, DNP, RHIA is an adjunct professor at UW–Parkside.

Dr. Tyczkowski was the founding HIMT Program Director at UW–Green Bay. She previously served as assistant to the regional field operations director for the State of Wisconsin’s Bureau of Nursing Home Resident Care in Green Bay, the director of training and implementation at an EHR company, and Director of Nursing at a 100-bed nursing home.

Dr. Tyczkowski earned her DNP from the University of Kansas, an MSN in Nursing Administration from UW–Oshkosh, and a BSN from UW–Green Bay.
