This internship focused on determining if historical paper medical records from CTCA CCRC CHICAGO were eligible for destruction or should be retained for a longer time. This project entailed sorting through 300+ boxes of these outdated records and reviewing their contents (date, names, type of record, etc.) to determine which category (destroy or retain) each record would fall into.
I followed the facility retention policy and conducted additional research of Illinois State Health Record Retention Laws, as well as AHIMA retention standards in order to determine the qualifications of which records would need to be retained. I referenced this research throughout the course of the project as a guideline to ensure laws and standards were met.
